Administration

Jim Hering

Principal

Born and raised in Ohio, Mr. Jim and his family moved to Albuquerque in 2003. He has worked with students in volunteer and paid positions since 1996. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (Social Studies) in 1989 from The Ohio State University. After a short career in reprographics, he earned a Master of Arts in Christian Education in 2002. He lives in Albuquerque with his wife and their four children and three dogs. He has been teaching at Pathways Academy since August 2008 and succeeded Ms. Jan as principal teacher in August 2017 when she became a board member.

Melissa Gaenzle

Administrative Assistant

Ms. Melissa joined the staff in January 2018. She has had various jobs ranging from banks, gyms, dental office, therapy offices, and phone company. She found Pathways Academy to be a great fit where she can help out in any way possible. One of her favorite things is photography, but more than anything she loves spending time with her husband of 25 years and three children and two fur babies.

Teachers

Scott Howard

Born and raised in Albuquerque, Mr. Scott has a bachelor’s degree in religious studies and a master’s degree in theological studies. He spent 27 years teaching high school theology and leading youth retreats. Recently retired, he decided to follow a new path. He is currently earning an alternative licensure in Special Education from Eastern New Mexico University and has an endorsement in Language Arts. He spent a year teaching in APS and recently happily joined the Pathways staff. Mr. Scott lives in Albuquerque with his wife of thirty years, and they enjoy spending time with their three grown children.

Julie Murray

Ms. Julie has her degree in Psychology from Liberty University (2017), she has been with Pathways Academy for over 6 years, starting as an Educational Assistant, and is now our newest teacher. Ms. Julie lives in the Albuquerque area with her husband of 23 years alongside a plethora of pets. She enjoys time with her children and a grand baby.

Max Powders

Born and raised in Albuquerque, Mr. Max spent his freshman year of college in Israel. Not long after his return home he became part of the Pathways staff as an educational assistant. Upon receiving his bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico he became a member of the teaching staff. Most of his formal training is in autism spectrum disorders and he is highly qualified in applied behavior analysis.

Educational Assistants

Bob Zucker

Bob is a transplanted New Yorker. He and his wife came to Albuquerque in 2011. Bob majored in American History and Photography in college. After that on to tech school for electronics. He spent 19 years in telecommunications. His wife Barbara taught at Pathways until 2014. Bob began volunteering and in 2016 became a part time EA. In 2021 he began full time at Pathways.He works in the Middle school and Elementary school as well. Outside of Pathways he is a lifetime runner and hiker and lover of the mountains.

Victoria Serrano

Hello my name is Victoria, I started working at pathways academy during fall 2022. I have
experience in working customer service in retail and helping the community through backpack
drives in the south valley where I grew up. My hobbies are knitting, swimming, and reading. I am
engaged and enjoy spending time with my loved ones and all of our pets. I've definitely learned
while working at pathways that everyday is unique and to always look at the positives.

Pathways Academy has met the requirements established by Cognia and is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. (North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) is a accreditation division of Cognia®.

As a result of this accreditation, Pathways Academy is licensed as an Albuquerque Nonpublic School by the Secretary of Education for the state of New Mexico.
